I would put it in a much larger pot and let it grow wild for a few years.

I had an old lathe scrap and decided to make good use of it. No trimming or root work has been done and, while the pot is not large, the soil drains well and the wooden bowl will last a couple of seasons at least. Most importantly, it is much more aesthetically pleasing than a terra cotta pot.
Thank you all for your advice.

If there is no hole in the bottom of the pot ot won't drain and you will get root rot.

If it is not root bound then pulling it out of the pot will disturb the roots too much.

Two plans are:

1) Drill some holes in the bottom side of the pot, in the back where they won't show. Cross your fingers and hope the pot doesn't crack.

2) Cover the dirt completely with plastic wrap, tin foil, or something, turn it upside down carefully, drill a hole or two in the bottom of the pot, and turn it back upright. Cross your fingers and hope the pot doesn't crack. This requires some arrangement to hold the pot while you drill. Be careful not to drill into the roots too much.

I don't know how to drill holes with your fingers crossed. :P

Good luck.
