I, too, am a new Bonsai mom as I received my common Spruce for Xmas as well. These are all questions I'd like an answer to as well. I did read that we are to re-pot them in spring when the growing season begins. I also read that my type of Bonsai needs to endure the winter to complete its growing cycle, shutting down and changing color. I am currently keeping the root ball from freezing by utilizing a styrofoam cooler, insulating the inside, and putting the pot it came in into it. I then cut a slit in the lid as so the lid fits back on the cooler, and then wrapped it up loose with a kitchen trash bag to keep unwanted moisture out. As for pruning and wiring? I am a clueless newbie like you so I'll climb aboard and watch for a response as well. Tia

This thread is about a tropical species. It do not need a seasonal dormancy. In the tropics there are no real winter, just dry and wet season.
