Hi everyone! Ive decided to use a growlight on my bonsai. Am i right in assuming that this is okay, or this is correct? Its placed on a semi-shade roofed veranda. I really cant put it outside because it might be stolen. im still in the process of creating a fenced up plant box. lol and it might take a while. for the mean time, is this enough? or is this okay? heres a photo in the morning and at night.

Ok or correct is an opinion, not a fact. But I can tell you that no experienced bonsai artist I know use grow lights. Sun is enough and it is for free.

For many species a semi shaded veranda provides enough ligtht, for some it is not enough. To be able to identify if the grow light together with the sun recieve is enough you can either measure PAR levels throuout the day or just look at the trees over time.

Edit: looking at your picture. Trees in leafless stage needs no light at all.

oh nice. good to know. for the mean time ill just keep this here under growlights until my fenced plant box project is done. i did the math and having to recover bonsai from under growlights might be easier than losing them to thieves. lol

btw, youve mentioned trees on leafless stage. so its okay not to put it under growlights. just watering is enough?

Yes, trees that do not need light, do not require grow light eigther :)

That ribbed fence, what direction is it facing? Looks quite light to me. I have most of my trees behind a ribbed fence like that southern facing in Sweden. That is enough without grow lights for most species.

Sadly its facing southwest and as what i can see, its only like 10-20% full sun light coming in.

Sothwest is where I keep all my trees. Behind ribbed fence and in Sweden. Just download an app for PAR measurement. They will not tell you the accurat figures. But it will show you excactly how much difference the grow light makes. I guess very little. I need 200w led light in my indoor grow tent to even get close to outdoor sun in Sweden. Your outdoor sun is much stronger.
