I do not know what a Vitex plant is. But generally, bonsai soil is for bonsai pots. If it is not in a bonsai pot there are no need for bonsai soil.

You need to grow it in the ground for a few years, as it is a Mediteranean plant it may not be hardy where you are. Look it up to see more information about the plant.

The vitex is a fast growing tree ,you were right it is from south med. It is supposed to be great for bonsai. I live in Florida zone9b it likes full sun and is very hardy. I am letting my tree stay outside to get strong for one year and see what happens. I have read and seen videos on the site named the bonsai supply. See attachments

What do you think of this vitex as for bonsai.

I have a bougainvillea with a very similar structure starting from the base. (I'll have to add some pics when I get a chance). I put mine in an oversized pot to thicken it up before I make any large cuts. It may be interesting to see how our design choices could compare down the road. Maybe a nice opportunity to review a project as it is, as well as how it might have been in an alternative case? This is all contingent on mine surviving in the hands of a newbie of course.

One thing I see working well in the case of both of our trees would be going for an informal upright using a clip and grow technique. I'm still speculating though. Plenty of time to go around in the trunk development phase.
